Evaluating Your Options

Services, schools, camps, and offers: how to judge what is worth your money and your time.

Topic Overview

Recruiting is full of things that cost money and promise exposure: subscription services, showcases, camps, paid profiles. Somewhere around sophomore year the pitches start finding you, and they're hard to compare against each other.

The recruiting-service guide breaks those products into the pieces they're actually made of, shows how each of those jobs gets done without a subscription, and walks through working out your own number before you sign anything. The first question to ask is who writes and sends the messages to coaches, because on most subscription products the answer is your athlete.

The visits guide covers the other decision families spend real money on. An official visit is paid for by the school hosting you and an unofficial visit is one your family pays for, and who pays decides how many you get, when you can go, how long you can stay, and what a school may hand you while you're there.

What these guides answer

  • What a recruiting service sells, and how those same jobs get done for free
  • The questions to ask before you pay, starting with who does the sending
  • How to work out what a service is worth to your family specifically
  • Who pays for an official visit, and when the calendar opens by division
  • What to look at and what to ask while you're on campus
